In the summer of 2003, the Price family took a family vacation to Ethiopia. It was an experience three young sisters, Lulit, Mehron, and Luladay Price, would never forget. Before even leaving Bole airport, we were approached by child beggars, some no older than us. They stood barefoot on the cold asphalt begging for enough money to eat dinner that night. Some of the children could not have been older than 8 years old, yet they were out on the streets alone pleading for money. We found this unacceptable.Throughout the month our family spent vacationing in Addis Ababa, we continued to witness scenes of poverty; however, sights of the children begging resonated with us. These children desperately needed better and more clothing, food, and shelter. It was amazing to us that we could have so much, and they so little. We couldn’t remain unchanged from the poverty we witnessed. We needed to do something to help their desperate situations. So we decided to do something about it.
From our collective determination, the organization Kids Helping Needy Kids, Inc. was born.
With the help of our parents, especially our mom, the commitment begun between three sisters in America to three needy children we met during our stay became an official non-profit organization over the course of several years. We pooled our allowances and decided at the time to donate $2 a week, or $8 a month (roughly $100 a year). This money, coupled with letters of encouragement and care packages, constituted the first sponsorships under Kids Helping Needy Kids. That was in 2003. Today, our method remains the same. The cost of a sponsorship, which contributes to buying an Ethiopian child’s food, is still $8.00 per month. (By comparison, a coffee from Starbucks is about $4.00). So, for the price of 2 drinks at Starbucks, you can support one child through KHNK for a month!
To supplement the monthly aid, KHNK collects materials to assemble into care packages, which are sent three times a year. (To see what ingredients make up a care package, click on “What Is a Care Package?” in the sidebar.) But by far the element most important to a sponsorship is the letters of encouragement sponsors send to their sponsored children. KHNK aims to foster personal relationships between each sponsor and their child; letters provide information but carry a personal element to the monthly aid received.
Please click around our website to find out more about us. There are many different elements to our organzation, and many different ways to help. KHNK maintains a waiting list for children needing sponsors; we always welcome new volunteers.
Can we count on you?
